GRILSE Chiefs and POs: are you attending post-secondary education next year? Start applying for scholarships, including this one, the Karen Furstrand Memorial Scholarship. Details below.

Please note that because the CO is a member of the selection board for this scholarship, you cannot use the CO as a reference for this application. You must seek a letter of reference from the XO or another Corps Officer.

The Karen Furstrand Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving Lower Mainland Sea Cadet who is applying for or is already attending post-secondary education. The Scholarship amount is $1000, which will be paid directly to the post secondary institution. The scholarship is only open to Sea Cadets who attend one of the Lower Mainland Sea Cadet units, or to someone who has aged out from one of the Lower Mainland Sea Cadet units within the past year. Previous applicants may re-apply if they were not successful on their previous application.

The application form for 2012 is located here. It is a form-fillable Word document, applicants can type directly into the form.

Deadline for applications is 30 March 2012. Electronic delivery is preferred.

Please ensure all supporting documentation, reference letters, transcripts and pictures are attached.

Email to:

al.groff at shaw.ca

Cadets may also CC my personal address at:

kevindeck at shaw.ca

Please do not send to my Cadetnet.

Hard copy may also be sent to the mailing address indicated in the application.

Please make sure the subject line is clearly marked as “Furstrand Scholarship Application – Applicant’s Name”

Electronic senders will receive a reply to acknowledge receipt. If they do not receive a receipt within a couple of days of submission, they may follow up with me by telephone at 604-944-2333.

The scholarship is a memorial to Karen Furstrand, a former Sea Cadet of RCSCC BICKNELL, who was killed in a car accident in May 2005. This is the 8th year of the scholarship. We have seen some very impressive Cadets apply for this scholarship each year, and it has been a difficult choice every year to choose one Cadet who is most deserving of the award. The review committee looks forward to another group of strong applications this year.

A Cadet Mess Dinner is based on hundreds of years of Naval Customs and Traditions, adapted to the Cadet organization. Here is a guide you can download and read: Naval Mess Dinner Guide.

Cadets, of course, can ignore any parts that mention wine, drinks or fines. Cadet Mess Dinners serve fruit juice or punch instead of wine, and instead of fines, the President of the Mess Committee reminds diners of the proper etiquette by having them perform songs or dances, by changing their meal privileges (ie, being last to be served dessert), etc. A Cadet Naval Mess Dinner is all about fun, within the framework of acceptable Naval etiquette!
